THE ASK

Over the past five years Woodies have raised over €1.5m for Irish charities with their annual Woodies Heroes fundraising campaigns. In order to celebrate heroes, staff and customers have found creative ways to raise money for their charity partners - including bucket collections, bake sales and face painting.

For the 2020 campaign, Woodies wanted a more digitally focused format, a fundraising mechanic that was interactive and engaging, but also in line with regulations at this time.

THE RESPONSE

Woodies Heroes: Going To The Moon And Beyond. Over 4 week period Woodies would cover the distance from Earth to the Moon, a heroic feat covering 384,400 kilometres.

Colleagues and customers were invited to put their best foot forward and raise money in the process - by making a donation and contribute miles towards the overall distance - from walking, running, cycling, swimming, and in one case, hopping!

Customers had the option to make a donation at the till and also contribute the average number of steps covered on a shopping trip to Woodies.

Each store had a mileometer plotting progress throughout the campaign.

THE RESULT

There were huge levels of colleague and customer engagement in the initiative and both the fundraising and distance targets were smashed.

Over €250,000 was raised for Down Syndrome Ireland, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland, and ISPCC Childline.
