Transforming an annual live event into a spectacular virtual one.

2020 was a challenging and successful year for Tesco Ireland as it responded to the pandemic, adapting the shopping experience, ensuring that shelves remained stocked and customers were kept safe. Tesco wanted to recognise the role that 14,000 colleagues played in rising to this challenge, and celebrate the talent and brilliance throughout the company, which makes Tesco a great a place to work.

If the business could adapt to COVID-19, so too should Tesco’s Got Talent, the annual talent competition that identifies raw talent, shines a spotlight on it and helps to celebrate it in its best light. It was important that the shift from being a live event to a virtual be used as an advantage, with the new COVID-friendly format designed to maximise reach & engagement amongst colleagues.

Tesco’s Got Talent: a hybrid, X-Factor-style event broadcast to colleagues via an online streaming platform. The 90 minute live event was produced to TV specifications, and broadcast live from a TV studio. The production included footage from 23 pre-recorded videos and 16 live link ups from across the country. 6 finalists performed live from the studio.

The event was presented by Darren Kennedy, with Louis Walsh chairing the judging panel and Erica Cody coaching the finalists on their performances. Several features were built-in to maximise audience interaction including a live comment stream and audience voting for the winning act.

Backup Marketing looked after all aspects of the production from the look and feel, the audition process, the promotion of the event, the live show, the creation of all content and the management of all digital and social channels.

2020 was the 7th year of Tesco’s Got Talent 2020, and was the biggest and most inclusive to date.

230 colleagues entered the competition.

In excess of 5,000 colleagues watched the broadcast - a huge increase on previous years as a live event where the audience was typically 300 people.

1,500 people interacted with social channels and designated hashtags during the broadcast.

Backup converted our annual in-person event into a spectacular virtual show which was available as a live broadcast to our more than 13,000 colleagues and their families all across Ireland.

Every element of the process was very professional, from the TV studio production to the dedicated website created to view the show. Thank you to the Backup team for helping make the event such a success!
